Alice Sutherland-Hawes: What I’m Looking For
Actively looking for: Middle Grade for 9-12 (standalone and with series potential); tween stories to fit between MG and YA; quirky picture book illustrators; non-rhyming picture book texts; brilliant world-building; diverse and marginalised authors across all ages and genres.
Alongside my role as Rights Agent, I am also growing a Children’s, YA and picture book list. I’m looking for talent across all ages, from picture books to Young Adult, and am particularly keen to find new voices for readers aged 10-13.
Voice and world are what I look for in submissions. I’d love to see a brilliant, funny middle-grade adventure within any setting and am particularly keen to see books in a similar vein to Louise Rennison’s series, the ARTEMIS FOWL series and Karen McCombie’s ALLY’S WORLD series. I’d also love to see clever magic in middle-grade (ages 9-12) and teen (ages 13+), as well as strong friendships.
For young adult I’m looking for contemporary settings, preferably standalone, and not necessarily issue-led. I would love to find the next DUMPLIN’ and an anti-hero, and I’m particularly keen to see strong young women from all walks of life.
I’m only looking for author/illustrators, not just picture book texts. I’d love to see quirky illustrations across all mediums for ages 3+ as well as middle-grade.
Across all ages I’m looking for diverse and marginalised authors and illustrators. I’d love to see diverse stories across all genres including fantasy, romance and dystopia.
