Annie Ward’s Beautiful bad published in paperback today

The UK paperback of Annie Ward’s fabulous debut thriller, Beautiful Bad, is published today by Quercus.

Since its hardback publication in March last year, the novel has garnered a huge amount of attention, and has sold into an incredible 17 territories to date. In July last year, it was nominated for the Strand Critics Awards for Best Debut Novel, up against the likes of Stuart Turton and his acclaimed novel The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.

Film rights were scooped up by industry leader Sue Kroll, who will be producing the adaptation under the Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner as a Warner Bros. based production. The script will be written by Gina Welsh, who has an incredible backlog of productions, including the fantasy/horror series Castle Rock, based on the novels by Stephen King.

Publishers Weekly wrote a brilliant article about the story behind this spellbinding book when the deal was first announced.

The novel follows the relationship of Maddie and Ian…

It seemed like such a beautiful marriage…

Maddie and Ian’s love story began with a chance encounter at a party, while she was a travel writer visiting her best friend, Jo. Now, almost two decades later, they are married with a beautiful son, Charlie, and living the perfect suburban life in middle America.

But when a camping accident leaves Maddie badly scarred, she begins attending writing therapy, where she gradually reveals her fears about Ian, her concerns for the safety of their young son and the couple’s tangled and tumultuous past with Jo.

Following their story across the globe, sixteen years of love and fear, adventure and suspicion culminate in a frantic 911 call summoning the police to the scene of a shocking crime…

Reviews for the hardback were outstanding:

Beautiful Bad is beautifully written, beautifully twisty – and beautifully twisted. A dark thriller with real psychological depth” JP Delaney, author of The Girl Before

“Utterly gripping and thrillingly original – I loved the unique settings. Cannot recommend this book highly enough” Karen Hamilton, author of The Perfect Girlfriend

Annie Ward has a BA in English Lit from UCLA and a MFA in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute. The novel was published in paperback in the US last week by Park Row.
