Eleanor Oliphant : the runaway success of 2018

What a year 2018 was for Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.

Last month, it was announced that the production giants, MGM Studios, will partner with Reese Witherspoon’s  company, Hello Sunshine, in making the film adaptation of Eleanor Oliphant. The script writer is to be Liz Hannah, writer of the Stephen Spielberg film, The PostThis was a thrilling end to what was a monumental year for the book.

An article in The Bookseller today announced that Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is currently ranking as “the 22nd bestselling general fiction book since accurate records began.”

This follows an Amazon announcement listing Eleanor as among the top 10 bestselling products of 2018, ranking alongside the Amazon Dot, and Fifa 19 among others.

Here’s a little look at some of our favourite moments in the Eleanor’s journey so far:

The novel has spent 16 weeks at as a #1 Sunday Times bestseller, a jaw-dropping 64 weeks in the charts, and has sold 1.8 million copies in total – that’s 20 Wembly Stadiums full of Eleanor fans.  Broken down, that number includes 90,000 hardbacks, 806,000 paperbacks, 484,000 ebooks, 117,ooo audiobooks, and 240,000 international copies (in the English language and across all formats)!

The novel has not only captured the hearts of the Brits. Last year, Eleanor Oliphant spent 30 weeks in the top 5 of the New York Times bestseller list and multiple weeks at number 1.

Two million copies are currently in print.

Eleanor Oliphant was the overall #1 bestselling book in the market last year.

In  2018, Eleanor was nominated for an outstanding 19 prizes. It won the Costa First Novel Award 2017, the Popular Fiction Book of the Year at the Specsavers National Book Awards, the Readers’ Choice Award at the Books are My Bag Awards 2018, the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Novel Award, the Audio Production Awards, the Waverton Good Read Award, and not one, but three prizes at the British Book Awards – Marketing Strategy of the Year, Fiction Debut Book of the Year, and Overall Book of the Year.

It was shortlisted for The Desmond Elliot Prize 2018; the Independent Booksellers Book Award 2018; the Australian Book Industry Awards; the Books are my Bag Readers Awards 2017; the Festival Du Premier Roman award; and the Audiobook of the Year at the British Book Awards.

It was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction Award 2018, and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

The book was promoted in Tesco’s, Sainsbury’s and Waterstone’s over Christmas – and Waterstone’s even gave it a whole new jacket to coincide with Christmas (see below).

Gail herself has been featured in all different formats of the national press, from print interviews in The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph, to a front page feature in The ScotsmanGail has also had radio interviews on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row and BBC Radio London.
