2017 ended on a particularly thrilling note for Fiona Barton’s second book The Child, with it becoming a number 10 Sunday Times bestseller. We are totally delighted for her, but Barton is most probably taking it in her stride. She does, of course, have previous form when it comes to such accolades: her debut novel The Widow was also a Sunday Times bestseller, and a New York Times one too.
The Child – a Richard and Judy Book Club selection – sees Barton’s journalist Kate Waters return after a paragraph in an evening newspaper reveals a decades-old tragedy.
For one woman it’s a reminder of the worst thing that ever happened to her; for another it’s the dangerous possibility that her darkest secret is about to be discovered. And for Kate Waters, it’s the first clue in a hunt to uncover the truth about the baby’s skeleton unearthed on a building site.
The Child’s story will be revealed, and we strongly recommend being there when it is.
